Can Moodle be used to Educate the Masses in Africa with Janvier Nkurunziza
A lecturer and researcher in the UK (City of Glasgow College), I consider myself a life-long learner. I am passionate about learning and teaching using blended technologies (computer, mobile, etc.) to reach out to the less privileged so we develop a better world through education.
‘It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that the child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation’ (Nelson Mandela)
The author of this presentation presented a research paper (part 1) online (Moodle Mot Virtual Conference, August 2013) and at the Mediterranean Moodle Moot Conference in Africa (Tunisia, 2-3 October 2013).The paper argued that, to overcome the critical shortfalls in hardware, software, etc. and make progress in online teaching and learning in Africa (Rwanda), teachers need the support from their institution.
The second part focusses on the University of Burundi where forty instructors from five local and regional universities designed and developed online courses through Moodle. However, they faced huge implementation challenges (lack of infrastructure, slow Internet connection, etc.). The author makes recommendations to stakeholders so they meet local teaching and learning basic needs (pedagogical, technical, and administrative,etc.).
